In chemical and lubricants industry, labels are needed for indicating contents of drums, barrels, lubricant containers and vats, as well as for enlisting precautions to be taken while handling the chemical and lubricants. Correct labeling of all chemicals is essential for work place safety and is a legal requirement which avoids costly disposal of unknown products. There are different labeling requirements for hazardous and non-hazardous substances and also for chemical wastes.
Chemical labels are those labels that are found stuck on to the body of chemical bottles. These labels contain comprehensible formulas describing the components and their percentage value of which the chemical has been made. The details should be written in simple and understandable languages so that any person, who is having little knowledge of chemical formulas and is in need to buy the chemical, can purchase it and use the chemical as per his / her requirements. Appearance of label should be simple in basic terms and must not be over-elaborated. It should not be one that would confuse customers. It should have all the relevant information describing the components of the chemical in simple language, the warnings that a user must observe before using the particular chemical and any other relevant details about the methods to use. It should be made eye-catching. One can use the logo of the company on the label itself. It should be color coded.
It becomes imperative on part of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or distributor to ensure that each container of chemicals is labeled, tagged or marked with information regarding the identification of the chemicals with appropriate warnings and the name and address of the chemical manufacturer, importer or other responsible party. Labels and warnings must be legible. Failure to provide correct chemical safety label or chemical hazard labels can cause injuries, ill-health, death, fire and explosion. For example, when a worker mixes two chemicals or more, the mixing of chemicals can create toxic gases or even explosion, if the label on the two chemical bottles is not present. Hence, it is the moral responsibility of every manufacturer to use chemical labels on the commodity they are manufacturing.
