The term "drum kit" seems to have come from Great Britain. It was first created in the 1700s. In USA Drum set is popular. A full size drum set without any additional musical instruments instruments has a bass drum, floor tom, snare drum, tom-toms, hi-hat cymbals, a ride cymbal and a crash cymbal. There are more renowned brands. Drum kits are available in different ranges. They are for low end players. The top range is the professional range, which are either available in separate pieces or total Drum kit with Cymbals or according to your option. In a shell pack, you would have to buy all the hardware's, cymbals and a stool separately. Drum kits are also available in the Pearl Masterworks Range and Reference Series, the Mapex Orion Range, the Tama Starclassic BB, Starclassic Maple and the Omnitune Ranges. Even, you can buy separately the Basic Brass Cymbals like the Paiste 101 Range, Sheet Metal Cymbals like the Zildjian ZBT and ZXT, Meinl MCS and Classics, and the Paiste PST3 and PST5 Ranges.. The certified ranges are the Cast Bronze Cymbals like the Meinl MB20, and Byzance, the Zildjian Z, A and K Customs, and the Paiste 2002 and Signature ranges.

The snare drum set is a vital part of the set up and the kits are often built round it. So deciding to select the right kind of snare will save time and money. Many options are to be considered before buying a Drum set; the right kind of thickness, depth, and diameter and above all the sound.

However, some company such as Drum Workshop, Slingerland, and Tama Drums, use the opposite principle, and consider the depth of the drum. The Drums are identified by size 5" x 14".Some other manufacturers such as Premier Percussion Drum set, Pearl Drums set, Sonor Drum set, Mapex Drum set, and Yamaha Drum set the regular size for a 5 piece, are; 22" x 18" bass drum, 12" x 9" rack tom, 13" x 10" rack tom, 16" x 16" floor tom and a 14" x 5.5" snare drum. You can buy custom made.

Some famed drummers who played some of these above Drum kits are, Louie Bellson (1940) who played his dual bass drum kit, Ringo (1964) of Beatles played with Ludwig kit and step by step the trend towards larger drum kit began thereafter. Rock music became famous in 1970. The bring into play of electronic Drums also came into existence.
