Flood damage is the nightmare for every house owner. The causes of the phenomenon are multiple and you need to know some tips about water extraction in order to be ready to face the problem when it appears.

First, you need to turn off the power, even if the water does not seem to be anywhere near the electrical devices or outlets. It’s a safety precaution to plug off all the appliances and turn off the light in case of flood damage. Do not allow anyone, especially your kids, to go near the water because it is an electricity generator and could turn out to be a lethal danger. Before entering the flooded area, you need to put on goggles, gloves, and boots in order to protect you from dangerous situations. In instances like this, it is better by far to call professional water extraction services

You need to analyze the situation quickly and decide if you need to call for specialized services or do the job yourself. If the area flooded with water is not carpeted, you could do it more slowly. However, if it reached a carpeted area of the house, you definitely need to act fast to prevent more serious flood damage. You need to bail the water out with the help of some buckets, shop vac or many helpers and some mops.

If the water sits there for a long time it will be more likely to seep through the walls and affect the structure of the house which obviously cause severe flood damage. It will be very time consuming and costly to fix it, so you don’t need to allow this to happen. It would be more efficient and cheaper to call for professional help to handle the water extraction quickly than to let it sit there and cost you more later on.

After getting rid of the water, you need to start cleaning and drying the area. The first thing you should do is to throw away all things that were affected by water or by mold. Anything that can’t be salvaged must be thrown away. Clothing or other textiles that got wet need to be immediately thrown in the dryer in an attempt of saving them and prevent further flood damage to clothing. The wooden furniture needs to be moved out of the area as soon as possible to prevent flood damage, before it starts to absorb the water. You can make some safe areas where to deposit the things you manage to safe and a pile of rubbish outside. All the saved items need to be let out to dry in the sun if that is possible.

After having the flood damage under control, ventilation is an important thing to do once you have got rid of the water. Open all the doors and windows or place fans to dry the affected area. A constant airflow through the water extraction area will definitely decrease flood damage and the chances of mold growing. Try to remove all the wet items from the basement, because they add moisture to the air.
