There are a lot of tricks in web design that you can use to benefit your page effectiveness. One is to bear in mind that people who visit web pages are most generally 'scanners' as opposed to readers. They are going to scan your page searching for clues to get them what they want without reading any more than is necessary. They will navigate the page by scanning, and when they scan, they'll see what stands out first.

They come to your page for a reason, and they'll scan for words or phrases that will point them toward that goal. Someone proficient in web design will understand this and design their pages specifically to cater to scanners. They know 'tricks' for making some content stand out and making others kinda hang out in the background. Things like 'contrast', 'rhythm', proximity, and 'flow' are tools for the web designer. Out of them all, contrast holds the place of most importance.

When preparing your site for scanners, it's much like highlighting an article. You make the features they're looking for bolder. And you do this by implementing the techniques and tools that draw the scanner to where they want to go, and where you want them to go. If you're good at web design, then your visual style will draw people in to the important elements of your page.

Another golden rule for good web design is simplicity. A simple design will be a page that loads faster. It's easier for your visitors to scan and navigate. It responds quicker all the way around. So the more simple you can keep your design, the better off you'll be. It also makes your site easier to maintain and enable it to work better on other browsers and platforms.

The way to tell if a page has good web design, is to not just look at it's appearance. But look at the thinking behind the functionality. Good thinking brings about success. One way to ensure a good web design, is not to overload it with bells and whistles. Make sure that each and every element in your page serves a needed purpose. Don't clutter up the page with things that may look good, but aren't really necessary for the functioning of the site. Stay focused on the reason for your site.

Some of these tricks in web design are nothing more than common sense, but it you've never designed one before you may not think of them. So these will make you aware of how to think when you get into web design. Your content should be short, easy to read, and to the point. Put your more important information first. When a scanner first begins to scan, they need to be sure that they've come to the right place. Be short, to the point, and don't waste space with irrelevant information. There are a lot of tricks to learn in being good at web design. But it's fun, and it's a challenge, and it's what separates good sites from poor ones.
