Laser printers require ink toner rather than liquid ink as found in an ink cartridge. Ink toner is a powdered ink rather than a liquid. A quality ink toner is one that is ground to a consistently fine powder and then encased within a stable plastic cartridge. It used to be that you needed to pour the toner powder into the printer, causing a mess of powder dust that was dirty- and unhealthy to breathe. Now, it's a simple matter of inserting the cartridge filled with the powder. Some off-brands may have powder that contains tiny lumps, causing clogging and other problems, so when you find a brand that produces high quality printouts, you may want to stick with it.
