Do More Expensive Laser Printers Require Higher Quality Ink Toner?
If you purchase one of the high-end laser printers, are you destined to pay more money for high quality ink toner? There are varying grades of ink toner for different laser printers, but how do you know if you need the higher quality ink toner or if the everyday stuff will do?
Laser printers can vary in price from less than $200 to thousands- and often the more you pay for the laser printer, the higher quality ink toner the manufacturer will suggest you use in it. But is it really necessary or can you get buy with a standard ink toner that will often cost much less?
One important feature of a high quality ink toner is how finely ground the toner powder is. Ink toner is not a liquid, like an inkjet cartridge, but instead it is a powder that is either carbon based or made from organic dye granules mixed with polymers like polyester or styrene acryl ate, which acts as a binder to hold the pigment in place. The more finely ground the powder is, the higher the quality of the toner, as well as the finished product. A toner that is more coarse and grainy won't produce as clean a finish as the finer grind.
Another big difference between ink toner cartridges is whether the cartridge also contains the photoconduction drum. The drum is the component that actually transfers the image from the printer memory to the paper. In some laser printers, the drum is part of the printer itself and will need occasional replacement. However, in order to produce consistently high-quality documents, some laser printer manufacturers include the drum within the ink toner cartridge. It is critical to know whether your particular laser printers require this replacement drum within the ink toner cartridge. In fact, this is one of the most important factors in the quality of ink toner. If your printer requires this drum in the toner cartridge, you cannot substitute a lower quality ink toner.
The other most common element of quality in ink toner for your laser printers is whether you purchase new ink toner cartridges, remanufactured ink toner cartridges or refilled ink toner cartridges. Remanufactured ink toner cartridges are inspected, cleaned and often have the drum replaced when needed before being sold. Refilled ink toner cartridges do not- and will most often result in a lower quality print job. In order to produce the best possible printed documents, using the higher quality control of a new or remanufactured ink toner for your laser printers is recommended.
