We all know that cats can be notoriously picky eaters. Cats are concerned with great taste, and we want to give them the best quality gourmet cat food for our money. Just as we would consider buying organic or other healthy meals for our human family, there are some foods that are created better than others in terms of cat nutrition.
The main thing to look for in a good bag (or can) of cat food is the presence of quality ingredients. This means real meat such as chicken, fish or lean beef. The food should also have few (if any) preservatives, dyes or artificial flavors. Just as those things are not too good for the human diet, cats can certainly do without them. The presence of a lot of vitamins and minerals is an indication of good quality food. Taurine is a particularly important mineral for cats, as it keeps their eyes healthy. Other minerals paired with protein help cats maintain strong bones, joints and muscles, as well as soft, shiny fur and healthy skin. A balanced diet is important for cats, as they like a lot of exercise and do all sorts of running, jumping and playing.
As far as flavor goes, there are so many types of cat food to choose from. You can get dry or wet, although it is recommended that cats eat dry food most of the time. You can choose from chicken, salmon, turkey, seafood or a combination of meats. Wet food and treats have even more taste options, including some exotic flavors like seared Ahi tuna and filet mignon. It can be a great treat to feed your cat some gourmet wet food mixed with dry food as a treat a few times per week. With a combination of flavor, nutritional value and cost value (there are many coupons available!), your cat will be “purrr-fectly” happy.
