Kitten care is very important, because when a cat is young their ability to grow strong and learn all the right habits hinges on the way they are cared for in the earliest stages of their lives. Before you even get your kitten home, you want to make sure you have plenty of kitten food that is specially designed for your pet’s age group. You can also pick up some chicken or salmon cat treats if they are old enough, to spice up their diet a bit. But besides food and a place to sleep, what does a kitten need?
One of the first things you will need to do for your new kitten is give her a name, which most people wait to do until they actually have the kitty picked out, and sometimes even after they have him or her home. It’s often easier to name a cat after seeing its personality in action. Just remember that kittens tend to respond to the sound of names that end in “y” or “ie,” so those are always good choices.
The next step in kitten care is preparing a bed, getting the food and making the litter box ready. Kittens usually enjoy soft cat beds and snuggly blankets, but they will also probably want to get right into bed with you, so it might be a good idea to keep an extra blanky around in your bedroom that they can sleep in. In addition to wet and dry kitten food and some specially formulated chicken cat treats, you will also want plenty of fresh filtered water. Their box should be set up with plenty of litter; it should be cleaned daily and replaced with fresh litter weekly to ensure a sanitary and pleasant environment. You may also want to keep old newspapers spread around on the floor until they completely have the litter box procedure down.
If your new kitty wasn’t already vaccinated and fixed when you got him, you will need to take care of this as soon as possible. Other than that, all you need is a little love for a happy kitty.
