Images play an important role in attracting visitors to your site. Many webmasters fail to include an image to their article. If they add an image to the content on their site, their site will be much more interesting. People like to see images when they read content. The images allow the readers to easily read the content. Without images, the visitor will see the whole page as full of words and become reluctant to read it. Every content on the site should have an image. The image should not be too small otherwise people cannot see the details in it. It also should not be too large. If it is too large, it will distract away the attention of the visitors. It can be annoying because the customers read it.

The images on your site should be optimized for the search engine. If the images are not optimized, it will not rank in the image search result. There are many ways to optimize the image. The image you use should be original. It should not be ripped off from another site. If you want to use a picture that is not of your own work, you must hold the copyright to it. Picture that are taken from websites such as Flickr must referenced back to the owner. If you don’t reference, it will be as if you are claiming that the picture belong to you. Public domain pictures can be used on your site since their copyright is expired. If you use copyrighted image, you will find that your site don’t rank well.

Most of the pictures from website such as Flickr are copyrighted so it is not recommended that you use them. If you want to use a picture from another website, you must change it. For example, if you want to include a picture from another site in your banner image. You can use Photoshop to merge 3 - 4 images in the banner. In this way, it will be harder to detect that you are using a stolen image. You may not experience decrease in ranking when using picture from another website. However, using pictures from websites that contain strictly copyrighted images will cause your SERP ranking to fall.

The images on the page should have a small size. You should compress the image before using it on the site. If the image is not compressed, it will have a larger size. Large image will take a longer time to load. Your visitors will get annoyed if they have to wait for the image to load. Normally, if you put the image on top, the content won’t load until the image is finished loaded. It will make the visitors quit your site because they don’t want to wait for several minutes for the image to load. You can use ACD See to compress the image. The jpeg and gif image format are the two types of image formats that can be compressed to a small size.
