To understand what DNS management tools are one has to first understand what DNS is. DNS is an acronym for Domain Name System. Without going into a lot of technical jargon the domain name system convert's numbers to words. Every time you type a URL there's a domain name server that translates that name in to its respective numbers. So for lack of a better term the domain name server maps letters and numbers.

The most common DNS management tools usually come bundled with the Linux operating system. One such tool is called BIND, which is another acronym, and it stands for the Berkeley Internet Name Damon. This is one of the oldest of the DNS management tools and it is free. Early versions of BIND used a plain text zone file to map a domain name to its respective IP address. For instance, if the assigned IP address is 192.168.22. 37, instead of typing in http://192.168.22.37 to go to a web page you could map this number to a name in the zone file like this:

ns1 IN A 192.168.0.1 ;name server definition
www IN A 192.168.0.2 ;web server definition
ftp IN CNAME www.example.com. ;ftp server definition

The zone file and the BIND service will now convert www.example.com to 192.168.22.37 and then send you to the web page that you want to go to.

Today the BIND service makes use of databases instead of a plain text file to map letters to numbers. This has allowed for various types of BIND tools to be made that enters the information directly into the database. This has also allowed for numerous Perl scripts and Java scripts to be written which automates much of the Domain Name System activities, making life much easier for the system admin. On the other hand there is loss of granular control using a database. So it's a trade-off but one for the better.

There are also several paid versions of the DNS management tools. All of them do an outstanding job. Many of them are highly recommended for ease of use and security. One example would be a suite of tools offered by the ‘Men and Mice’ company. The suite comes with:
• DHCP Management Module
• IP Address Management Module
• DNS Expert Module (which can be run seperatly)

Bear in mind this is a highly condensed explanation. For more detailed information on the DNS management tools and using BIND please see http://www.bind9.net/
