Munich is the capital city of the German state of Bavaria. This southern city in Germany is situated on the River Isar, near the Alps. It is the third largest city in Germany and home to about 1.4 million residents.
The city’s motto is “Munich likes you” which is like a natural and friendly hello to all the visitors. The city’s name München means "by the monks' place", therefore, on the city's coat of arms; there is a monk with black and gold colours, same colours of the Holy Roman Empire.
The earliest historic records about Munich can date back to 1158. The region officially became a city in 1175. From 1180 to 1918, it was the time of the Wittelsbach Dynasty which took control of Munich and Bavaria. In 1806, the Holy Roman Empire was abolished by Napoleon and then Munich hosted the capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria. At that time, Bavaria is an independent nation. Until 1871, during the unification of Prussia, Munich became part of Germany.

The city is generally divided into six main districts, namely city centre, University area, Olympic area, Haidhausen, Neuhausen & Nymphenburg and Thalkirchen. It is good to know that Munich is always on the top of the list of cities where German people would most like to live.

There are reasons why people want to stay in Munich. At first, it has the most beautiful scenery in Europe due to its location which is near the Alps. Second, the architecture especially Baroque and Rococo styles can be easily found inside the city. What’s more, the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration happens in late October is something you can never miss.

With so many people wanting to stay, the negative aspect is that the city thus becomes the most expensive city in Germany. However, after weighing the pros and cons, it is worthwhile to make a visit.

Munich is never satisfied its fame for architecture and beers. The ambition of being a city of arts and science was born as early as in the 19th century. Even Berlin is the capital of German. But Munich is absolutely the centre for art in the country. Over centuries. Munich has bred numerous famous writers, artists, architects, and musicians, including: Egid Quirin Asam, François de Cuvilliés, Johann Michael Fischer, Albrecht Dürer, architects Barelli and Zuccalli (credited with bringing the Italian baroque style to Munich, a style that would become omnipresent throughout Bavaria), Leo von Klenze, Franz von Lenbach, Wassily Kandinsky and the artists of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) School of Expressionist art.
Car hiring is not necessary in and around the city centre as the transportation system is efficient and can fulfil all the requirements. However, it will be better if you arrange a car when exploring the nearby areas such as the holy mountain of Andechs and its Monastery, the famous castle Neuschawnstein.

If the area around Münich had a theme, it might be 'fairytale' and your car rental will enable you to soak up this unique atmosphere.

Car rental service is available from Holiday Autos, carhiremarket, CarDelMar, MyCarHire, AutoEurope, Opodo, CarHire3000, Expedia, arguscarhire.com, ebookers, Netflights.com and Hertz.
