Woman will wait until after climb before roller skating

A woman has noted she will wait until after she returns from a climb up African mountain Kilimanjaro before trying out some new roller skates.

Writing on WalesOnline, health editor Madeleine Brindley revealed she bought the items this summer.

She is a member of the Brains SA Captains Climb team, which will head up the world famous landmark in September.

Along with 15 former Wales captains and current coach Warren Gatland, she is attempting to raise £1 million for the Velindre Cancer Centre's Stepping Stones appeal.

The initiative was launched in a bid to raise awareness of the appeal and to generate money to further its research programmes.

According to those behind it, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in England and Wales and it is not only smokers who are affected.

Commenting on her decision to get skates, Ms Brindley said: "I bought a pair of roller skates, partly on a whim and partly to satisfy a childish sense of injustice.
"I never owned a 'proper' pair of skates - I had to make do with a pair of metal strap-on skates that fitted around my trainers."

The pair that she purchased would be good for roller skating in discos she claimed.

However, at the moment they are simply gathering dust, she admitted, as she is too concerned about injuring herself prior to her charity endeavour.

She added: "It's not that I've gone off skating, I just feel I can't risk skating, injuring myself and jeopardising Kilimanjaro."

Ms Brindley went on to say she is in "full-blown safety mode" at present and is being extra cautious in everything she does, meaning roller skating is temporarily off the cards.

For example, when she takes a morning run, she concentrates on not twisting an ankle and she double-checks where she puts her feet while on her weekend hikes.
