However, when a blood clot prevents the natural flow of blood, blocks a vein, or blocks an artery, it becomes harmful and extremely hazardous to our health. If it breaks free and begins to travel throughout the body, it can lead to the lungs, pelvis, smaller blood vessels, and cause potential problems, which are potentially fatal. A person can experience many possible effects with a blood clot. For example, if they have deep vein thrombosis, also referred to as DVT, which is located within the veins of the pelvic or legs, can suffer from any of the following symptoms: prominent veins, discoloration, tenderness, swelling, or pain within the muscles of the legs or the calf.

The above symptoms are extremely serious and life threatening, therefore, if you notice any of these signs you should immediately seek medical attention. Some people are at an increased risk of developing a blood clot. For example, those who suffer from any type of cancer have a high risk of developing blood clots. It is for this reason, that cancer patients generally cannot travel far distances in cars, trains, or airplanes, without having to stop now and then to walk and get their flow of blood moving again.

Summer is once again here and many of my patients are traveling on vacations, or visiting friends and relatives across the country. Before they go, however, I like to give them some pre-travel advice about a potentially serious medical condition that can occur with long periods of sitting in cars, trains, and airplanes... blood clots. Blood clots in the legs can often be overlooked as a pulled muscle, as they can feel like a "Charlie Horse" type of cramp. Look for swelling of the leg, warmth to touch, redness or bluish discoloration, pain.

Not as common as leg or lung blood clots, but kidney clots do occur. The symptoms are sharp pain in the lower back, usually on one side, inability to urinate, high blood pressure, retention of fluid, swollen ankles, and shortness of breath. Of all the possible complications that can follow surgery, thrombosis (blood clotting that either partially or completely obstructs a blood vessel) is one of the most common and potentially the most dangerous.

Changing position in bed and walking promote circulation. Good blood flow discourages the formation of blood clots and enhances healing. The most important thing to prevent blood clots is early ambulation; however, if you are unable to get out of bed to walk, you can sit at the edge of your bed and dangle your feet, rotate your feet at the ankles, point your toes toward your face, and swing your legs from side to side.

Blood clots in the legs are very common conditions that affect many people in U.S. They are also known as DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis. This is when the pulmonary embolism happens. When the blockage is worse, it can prevent you from breathing freely and finally cost you your life. Based on the statistics, this pulmonary embolism is the third most common reason of death in U.S.
