For decades employers have been looking for ways to bring their workers together, unified and motivated to bring the company prosperity. They have used various methods to achieve these ends, ranging from motivational speakers to holiday celebrations. Until fairly recently, not many employers had thought to use the oldest form of team building known to mankind: music. Music is imprinted in every human’s DNA. Long before the concept of speech was created, early humans expressed themselves musically, through singing. As speech was developed, it replaced music as the primary means of self-expression, but music continued to serve a vital function. Musical instruments were created; drums became a staple of communal gatherings. Rather than sitting around a fire and discussing matters of interest to the community, members drummed, sang, and danced. This tradition has persisted among many cultures to this day. And now it is being used by businesses for corporate team building events.
Employers like the idea of the drum café because it is inexpensive, energizing, and breaks down barriers among the different levels of employees. When listening to a motivational speaker, the employees are passive observers. When engaging in group drumming, the employees are actively participating in a collaborative effort – and they will be having so much fun they will likely forget that they are even working on a group project. For the same price as a keynote speaker would charge to tell the workers that they all contribute something of value, you could engage the workers in an activity where they can actually see and hear what they are contributing. And that contribution is equal in a drumming session. The drum is a rhythmic instrument – all musicians involved are contributing equally to the rhythm. There are no lead parts or interludes that give one particular musician the spotlight. The lowest ranked employee is performing the same duty as the highest ranked employee. And it all comes together for a single goal: creating pleasing music.
With all that corporate drumming has to offer, no wonder it is becoming a common sight at San Francisco team building events.
