They say that the dog is man’s best friend – and taking good care of your best friend is of the utmost importance. These days, pets are omnipresent in almost every family – dogs become like children, not like animals. They get fed food from the table and walked whenever they want. Sometimes they even don outfits and join the family Christmas photo.

In short, your dog is important to you. He’s the one that helped teach your daughter to crawl, as she followed him across the living room floor and back again. He’s the one that helped your son learn to throw a curveball while he was practicing in the front yard with his baseball mitt. Hence, it’s understandable that you want to keep your dog in tiptop health and great shape. If anything goes wrong and he falls ill, you want to ensure that you can easily take care of him and give him whatever it is that he needs. This article will highlight common dog medicines for ailing pups, in hopes that if your poor pooch falls ill, you’ll know where to turn.

One of the most basic problems a dog can have is fleas. If your dog gets fleas, make sure you give him a bath with flea and tick shampoo right away – if you don’t, your dog will be extremely uncomfortable, and his fleas could spread to the other pets in the house. Flea and tick shampoo kills fleas, ticks and lice. To use it, thoroughly soak your dog so that all of his fur is wet. Use warm water. Then, apply the flea and tick shampoo on his head and ears and lather it up, then repeat the procedure on the neck, chest, middle and hindquarters. Lather up the legs last. Let the animal stand for three to five minutes (this is important!) then rinse him thoroughly. Repeat every two weeks to keep fleas far from your dog.

If you’re looking for something a bit more preventative, consider an Omega supplement for your dog. This treatment aids in the management of pruritis, seborrhic conditions and the restoration of the skin and coat. It contains vitamin A and vitamin E and can be added to your dog’s food. Depending on what illness you are managing (improvement of skin and fur, management of seborrhea and management of pruritis), add a different amount to your dog’s food.

If your dog is suffering from asthma, he might just be able to use your inhaler! Just kidding – that would be quite gross – but he can use Advair, a prescription treatment for asthma symptoms used by both humans and pets. Advair treats the main causes of asthma, airway constriction and inflammation to help prevent symptoms in the first place. It’s not for your dog if he’s in the midst of an asthma attack, but it’s great as a method of prevention. It contains the same medicines found in Flovent, which is used by humans. It can be used to control your dog’s asthma long term, and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing. If you do think your dog is suffering from asthma, take him to the vet – they’ll be able to discern what treatment is best for your dog.

If you think your dog is suffering from fleas, you need to not just wash out the fleas or ticks with flea shampoo, but also treat him with a monthly flea medicine. What you’re looking for is a topical insecticidal agent that can be used in dogs and cats once a month to treat fleas. It should be applied to the skin between the shoulder blades every thirty days. Make sure you get the product that is aimed towards dogs, as dogs should use the dog product and cats should use the cat product.

Perhaps your dog is suffering from allergies. It’s not uncommon – think of how many humans suffer from allergies in the spring and summer. Dogs have noses too! You can get an allergy pill for your dog that contains various oils, including fish oil, borage seed oil and sunflower seed oil, among other things. The capsule can be punctured and squeezed on your dog’s food. Don’t worry; they’re flavored with vanilla, so your dog won’t be afraid to eat them!

As you can see, there are many medicines that you can give to your dog to prevent fleas, ticks, allergies and more – your dog likely suffers from the same common illnesses and annoyances as you and your family does. Take good care of your pets by making sure that you take them to the vet when anything goes wrong and that you order the medicines recommend by your vet – some of which might be the medicines discussed above! Often times, your dog might even be taking the same medicine as you are!
