Whether we just do it occasionally or it’s a treasured part of every day life, spoiling our small dogs is just plain fun. After all, they work hard making our lives better. (Well, okay, maybe it isn’t exactly work to them, but still, they definitely do it!) Sure, she may know she’s the queen of the realm; he may prance about like the crown prince of the household, but they do their jobs without fail—entertaining, loving and reducing our stress levels. Fine dining tonight? A treat from the gourmet dog bakery? They’ve earned it!
Seriously, a bit of pampering makes anyone, human or canine feel wonderful, and experiencing that feeling actually promotes good health. As doctors, veterinarians and healthcare specialists have been saying for years, happier folk live longer. The same is true for dogs. So if you can find a scrumptious dinner that your dog can’t resist—maybe Cesar grilled chicken primavera in sauce or beef tenderloin—why not?
Of course, not all delectable or gourmet foods are healthy for your pet (or for you). But with the variety of dog foods that are available, you can be selective in what you choose, reading the package, making sure that necessary daily requirements of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and such are being met without excess fat or calories. And when you find that combination of health and yum factors in one package, there’s no reason your dog can’t revel in dinners that look and taste like haute cuisine.
The same holds when you feed your dog breakfast. Would you want to start each day with bowl of plain kibble (or a human equivalent—perhaps some sort of dry breakfast bran cubes)? How much more appealing to start off the day with your vanilla chai, sliced papaya and freshly baked croissant, while your dog enjoys his own dog breakfast of bacon and egg or chicken and cheddar cheese soufflé.
For many of us, food is a great pleasure, and meal times are events. And the way we see it, why not do a little healthy spoiling; why not share that pleasure and make meals an event for our best furry friends, too?
