The human beings have become completely dependent upon the electronic items of their homes and offices. These electronic equipments have become our life line. This life line needs to be run by the electricity. At the work place if the power gets cut off even for a fraction of second we tend to bear huge losses in terms of money and data. Hence, uninterruptible power supply is needed for the constant running of the computers and other electronic devices even during the power cuts.

Uninterruptible power supply- the device

This is an electronic device that runs on batteries. Through the attached batteries the electricity is produced which is used to run the attached appliances during the power cuts. The uninterruptible power supply is also called UPS and is frequently used at the work place. This device has also been introduced at the homes and are highly used at homes nowadays.

Types of UPS

According to the working of the UPS, this device is divided into two main types. Standby power supply is frequently used at homes, whereas the Line-Interactive power supply is used at the workplace.

The Standby power supply is attached to the parallel lines of the appliances. As a result a small gap is produced before the detection of power cuts and production of power from the device. This gap is produced as it takes a while for the batteries to recognize the missing power from the appliances. During this gap the appliances close down and either they start if they are set in auto start mode or else you need to manually start the appliances. This feature makes it unfit for office use, where this sudden closing down of computers would lead to heavy loss in data and money.

The only difference of the Line-Interactive power supply is that in this case the batteries are attached to the mains line of the appliances. Hence, the batteries keep charging always during the power supply and during the cuts the batteries get discharged and keep producing current. As a result, the computers and other attached appliances don't shut down and hence, this device becomes useful for the workplace.
