Single phase electric motor and three phase motor are two types of electric motors. A single phase electric motor needs little maintenance and can be used for years. This type of motor is used in devices that require low levels of horsepower where it is not good to use a three phase motor.

Single phase electric power means the distribution of electric current by using a system. In this, all the voltages of the supply may vary. This power distribution is mostly used in rural areas, where the price of a three phase power distribution network is high and motor loads are insufficient. This power distribution is used when loads are usually heating as well as lighting, with some large electric motors. The supply connected to the electric current does not generate a moving magnetic field; single-phase electric motors require more circuits to start and such type of motors are uncommon above 10 or 20 kW in rating. Standard frequencies of these systems are either 50 or 60 Hz.

Function

Single phase electric motors must be activated through a switch or other device to move their rotor as they can not create their own magnetic field. Therefore, moving rotor creates a magnetic field and makes it operate.

Types

There are various types of single phase electric motor such as capacitor-start, split-phase, two-valve capacitor, shaded-pole, wound rotor and permanent-split capacitor. All these types have their own benefits.

Uses

Single phase electric motors are perfect machines with low horsepower, generally fractions of one horsepower such as fans, refrigerators, pumps, portable drills as well as compressors.

Advantages

Single phase electric motors are less costly as compare to other motors. All types of single phase electric motors are too much efficient in their own way. Capacitor-start motors are excellent general purpose motors and are perfect for many occasions.

Considerations

The operations behind these motors are quite simple, but you can't say that there will not be any problem. Like any other machine, a single phase electric motor is also machine that sometimes can fail to start, overheat or run slow. When you touch the motor and feels like a shock then there may be any problem that requires to be repaired by a professional technician.
