Having a teenager who is addicted to drugs is one of the most stressful things a parent can experience. There is a feeling of loss and hopelessness that exists as the parent watches their child slip away from them as a result of drug abuse. If the unthinkable does occur – and your child develops a teen drug addiction – it is imperative that you get them the professional help they need.

What are the Most Common Teen Drug Problems?

As the years come and go, so to do the types of drugs that teens “favor” when using in their peer group. The following is a list of some of the most common drug addictions currently being treated at teen rehab centers around the United States:

• Vicodin addiction

• OxyContin addiction

• Marijuana abuse and addiction

• Heroin addiction

• Crystal meth addiction

• Ecstasy addiction

• Prescription drug addiction

Add to this the constant problem of teen binge drinking and alcoholism. As “street drugs” and prescription drugs come in and out of favor, underage alcohol consumption remains one of the biggest problems facing families and treatment professionals today.

Talking to Your Teen About Drug Addiction

Hopefully, you had a chance to talk to you child at a young age about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Many parents mistakenly believe that you must wait until your child is in their teen years before having this frank and honest discussion with them. The sad fact is that by this time, chances are good that your child has already been presented with an opportunity to do drugs.

If you suspect that your teen is using drugs, it is important to sit them down and explain everything that is at stake. Tell them that you love them and you are going to do everything in your power to help them break the cycle of addiction so that they can enjoy a healthy and happy future. Be firm and honest – but express how much you care about their well-being.

Holding an Intervention for your Teen

Once you have identified that there is indeed a problem, and talking to your child about their addiction has not produced the desired results, it may be time to hold an intervention. A drug or alcohol intervention brings loved ones together in attempt to confront the young person about their addiction – and show them how their behavior is impacting the lives of those around her. A professional interventionist can help you choose the best location for the intervention – as well as the best things to talk about in front of your child.

Once the intervention is complete, and the child is ready to come to terms with the fact that they have a problem the next step is to get them directly into a teen drug rehab program. Research programs in the area beforehand and find the one that best meets your needs. Have the child’s personal effects packed up and ready to go at the intervention so that you can keep the momentum going.
