Dosha is any malefic combination or placement in the birth chart. Kaal means the time and Sarpa means snakes. Here in Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu- the two shadowy planets- are known as Sarpa or Dragon. Rahu- known as Moon’s north node and Ketu as Moon’s south node and Dragon’s Head or Dragon’s Tail respectively. Rahu and Ketu are always 180° apart. Complete Kaal Sarpa Dosha is formed when all the planets lie between Rahu and Ketu – thus occupying half of the chart. It means the other half of the chart is totally vacant. Even a single planet when leaves behind Rahu or Ketu then it cancel the aforesaid Dosha. According to some then it is known as partial Kaal Sarpa Dosha.

There are many variations of the Kaal Sarpa Dosha which mainly depends on the house wise position of this Dosha forming. There are twelve houses in the chart thus you can get twelve positions of this Dosha. So we get twelve types of Kaal Sarpa Dosha. The effect of this Dosha depends on the houses and planets involved. So their effect is different according to the position.

Mostly it is observed that the planets could not produce their effect completely as their effect is reduced when hemmed between this axis. Even the effect of a strong planet gets reduced because of this Dosha. It is then not able to produce the effect completely according to its strength in the chart.

One feels restlessness, obstacles and hurdles in his endeavours, loss, problems in relations, tensions, health problems etc. The most effect is observed on the significances of the houses involved and the planets – if conjunct to this axis. Actually Vedic classics have not enumerated much about Rahu and Ketu and there needed a lot of research work upon them so as to know their effect and then proceed for their remedy. There are many remedies opted and famous by some people and some of them too costly too. A simple remedy is recommended to perform for this Dosha, its effect start working after nine months. Since it is very simple and cost nothing much so everybody can perform it easily. Install a pair of silver snakes and perform Puja of both of them by milky water, applying tilak of white chandan and rice, offering them white flowers and sugar. Recite the following mahamritunjaye mantra at least 11 times.

Om Tryambakam yajamahe Sugandhim pushti-vardhanam Urvarukamiva bandhanan Mrityor mukshiya mamritat. The above said mantra is to be recited only once a month – i.e. on every panchami of the shukla paksha means- on every fifth day of the waxing moon.

The dasha of Rahu makes its effect conspicuous. So when a person having Kaal Sarpa dosha and also running under effect of dasha of Rahu then it is suggested to recite navnaga mantra to reduce its ill effects. Anantam Vasukim Shesham Padmanabham cham Kabamlam, Shankhapalam Dhritrashtram ch Takshakam Kaliayam tatha. This is the Navnaga Mantra, which asks the nine snakes to free you from their bondage and give you protection. Recite this mantra for 11 times daily and worship Devi Jagdamba and Lord Bhairav.
