BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the small but feisty bike. Like Motocross, it is about hitting all terrains and hitting them hard, although it has evolved from simple racing to become a lot more about tricks, stunts and taking cycling to the extreme.

While being hugely popular for racing from the 70s and all the way through the 80s, in the 90s, BMX bikes faded from mainstream popularity, still holding a place in the hearts of some, but being quickly replaced by mountain bikes for most. However, during this time the idea of BMX as a sport evolved. The tricks and stunts were considered more important by those few who still clung onto these unique cycles, and soon BMXing wasn’t just about racing and jumping in the dirt, but it also became an extreme sport.

It is this development more than anything else (although our love of nostalgia and fickle sense of fashion will surely have helped it along) that has brought about the resurgence in the popularity of BMX bikes. With the increasing recognition and interest in extreme sport competitions, the potential of many a thrill-seeker to push themselves to the limit has been reignited through this tiny two-wheeler. The urge, particularly in the younger generation, to want to copy the daredevil stunts that have become commonplace in films and television is giving BMXing a new lease of life which looks unlikely to fade any time soon.

Besides the more extreme aspects of the bike, riders are also remembering that using them is simply fun. As a mode of transport, it is quirky and enjoyable and even just a simple jump off the curb can feel like a real stunt.

So when it comes to bikes, it seems that bigger most definitely doesn’t mean better.
