Did you know that the stop sign was invented in Michigan, way back in 1918? It is arguably the most important sign in the whole world. It was used to prevent any kind of collisions on road junctions and intersections. Traditionally, these were in black and white and were 24-inches long. Nowadays, we mostly see octagonal shaped signs that are designed in red and white.
Typically, we see policemen using handheld stop signs on roads and traffic areas. The reason for using a hand-held Stop Sign rather than a fixed one is that a hand-held board is relatively easy to use. A fixed sign board can’t be used to signal “STOP” to traffic coming from all directions. But if the sign is a hand held, it can be moved accordingly and controlling the traffic becomes much easier.
Many intersections have a heavy flow of traffic especially during rush hour. Often, people fail to see a car that is rushing towards them when they are crossing a street in hurry. This leads to accidents and road mishaps. Handheld stop signs used at crosswalks and intersections have helped in saving a lot of lives by allowing pedestrians to cross the street safely.
Although, these handheld stop signs are found at the intersections of roads, we can also see them at parking lots. A lot of parking lots face busy roads and people are always walking through them during times of heavy traffic. The red and white sign that says “STOP” has a dramatic effect on the mind of the pedestrian. It actually acts as a red alert and the person halts immediately.
The hand-held stop signs come with a variety of text messages that say “Stop Ahead”, “Caution,” “Cross Traffic,” “Yield,” ”2-Way” or “4-Way.” Though the boards are usually octagonal in shape and red and white in color, we sometimes get them in triangular or square shapes and in yellow color. These boards are also used to warn people if they are trespassing on private property, or if they are approaching schools or hospitals. Sometimes, companies use these signs to keep trespassers outside their premises.
