A swimsuit popularly known as a swimming costume or a bathing suit is a piece of clothing meant to be worn while swimming, surfing, sun bathing and other such water sports. It is also popular as an undergarment in sports that require wetsuits like scuba diving and wakeboarding. They are also called togs or bathers in some countries.
They are available in many designs form the ones that cover the complete body to the ones that expose most of it covering only that is required according to the personal community norms. In the ancient times swimming was done without wearing anything and only some people used special water apparel. With the invention of swimsuits this special water apparel lost its existence. In the 19th century the two-piece suits became extremely renowned. After sometime the bathing wear started to shrink on size and exposed legs and arms completely. The collars declined from the neck to below the shoulder line. The discovery of new fabric gave new dimensions to the look of the typical swimsuit.

Women swimsuits comes in 3 varieties- one-piece, bikini, and monokini whereas the men swimsuits are available in varieties like swim briefs, mankini, fundoshi, trunks, swim jammer and square leg suits. They are also available in competitive swimwear range. These are basically designed for athletes in swim competitions. They increase the efficiency of forward motion by reducing friction.
Bacteria fungus and mold easily grows on wet bathing suits and therefore is very important to check their hygiene factor before wearing. It is medically advised not to wear damp swimsuits for a long period of time as it can lead to a number of infections and can also cause rashes. Sharing the swimsuit is also not considered prudent. Therefore changing out the swimsuit right away is wise as it prevents vaginal infections in females and jock itch in males.
Alternatively track pants, shorts and t-shirts can be used in the place of swimsuits.
