The vast majority of the rifles available come equipped with a standard sighting device. Without any doubt, the rifle sight is a crucial component of any type of rifle due to the reason that it permits the hunter to make all the necessary adjustments for enhancing overall accuracy. Adjusting a rifle sight in the right matter is a very easy thing to do and it will bring positive results to any type of hunter. With this article we will try to offer a few tips to properly set rifle sights.

The first step would have to be to set up a target with a bulls-eye about approximately 20 yards away. Your local gun range is the ideal place to set the sight on a rifle. You now need to rest your rifle on a stable structure that will minimize recoil. After doing so, shoot three rounds at the established bulls-eye. If you have not read “The Complete Guide to Hunting”, you need to know that it recommends taking your time to realign the sight on the bulls-eye between shots. You now need to retrieve the paper target and take not of the three bullet-hole locations.

The next order of business would be to establish the average point of impact. To do so, you must determine the average point of impact by marking an “X” in the center triangle of a three-shot pattern. After doing so, loosen the top screw and move the sight device lower or higher, depending on the shot pattern on the target. In small increments, you must slide the sight higher, if the “X” is below the bullseye. If the shot pattern is higher than the bullseye, slide the device lower.

After that, if the “X” is right or left of the target, loosen the side screw. You now need to move the sight adjustment to the right slightly in the case if the shot pattern is left of the bulls-eye. On the contrary, if the pattern is to the right of the bulls-eye, move it to the left. After doing so, adjust the rifle right screws incrementally until the shot pattern or “X” lands inside the bulls-eye of the target. Last but not least, re-tighten the screws as your rifle is now properly sighted.

As a warning advice, always shoot in a designated safe zone or local gun range. You also need to be aware of the fact that bullets shot from rifles can travel for miles and miles after missing or deflecting off a target which is why you need to be very careful when making the shot and choosing the appropriate area for making the shots.

As a conclusion, target sights are very important to any given rifle and regardless of the type of hunting conducted by the shooter. Rifle sights are also important for competitive shooting, not only hunting purposes. Adding a scope to a rifle will further enhance the overall accuracy of the rifle and bring more benefits to the shooter and his hunting expeditions.
