If you discover a dry basement but there is water damage in your home, check for the source first. Check your water heater and any pipes you have access to in your home, such as under the sinks and through the access door of your tub connections. If you can find the leak, shut off your water supply to stop any additional water from escaping. Check to see if you have a dry basement or if the water damage has made it to the basement. Use old towels or blankets to soak up as much water as you can. You will need to find a reputable and dependable company that specializes in water damage and the repair of homes that have been damaged by water. Make sure the company you choose can respond very quickly. Every minute that the water is allowed to stay on wood, the more damages you will need to have repaired. The more damage, the more the repairs will cost. If the company you call can’t respond within twenty-four hours, move on to the next company.
The faster you get the bulk of the water off the floor, the faster it will dry. You can stand on the dry towels to soak up more water from carpets and other absorbent articles. If you find water damage on any furnishings try to wipe or soak up as much of the water as you can. You can also protect furniture legs by placing small pieces of aluminum foil under them to keep them dry. If it is sunny outside, remove wet cushions and area rugs to sunny areas so they can dry quickly. If your dry basement is a safe place, you can place buckets to catch water under the leak sight so you can capture any leaks before they do any damage. If the water has made it to your basement and all you have is a crawl space, open access doors to allow air to pass through and help speed up the drying process. If you have a full size basement and there is water damage, dry it up as best you can while you await the arrival of the company to do your repairs.
While you wait for the company you called to arrive, reduce water damage as you continue trying to dry things up as much as you can. Lift the drapery up off the floor and wrap them over the rod to keep them dry if the water is approaching. If it is summer and you have central air, turn the unit on to fan and then turn it to high. By keeping the air moving the water will evaporate faster. If wooden dressers and wardrobes are wet, remove the drawers before they swell or you won’t be able to access their contents without tearing the fronts off the drawers. Start collecting wet clothing and other washables so they can be dried. If your dry basement is safe, you can place photographs and other things that may be ruined on top of something to keep them safe.
