In neopagan religions and practicing witchcraft the double edged dagger called athame is used in the ceremony. Athame is meant in the pagan rituals as male sign in lieu of reproductive organ of horned god who gave cause to earth by impregnating goddess Gia. It is generally with a black handle or a wooden one. Generally wood is used as it symbolizes Nature and Earth. The blade is made of steel as iron is not considered to be appropriate for the occasion. Iron melts quicker than steel as the ritual provides the knife to be plunged into fire several times.

The athame is not used as weapons for self defense but as sacred tool for conducting pagan rituals and spells. In Wicca tradition the blade finds the user and not vice versa. Many strange and unexpected things have taken place with athames. It is believed that athames has intellect of its own. It suddenly disappears from the owner and returns back. On certain occasions it is told that the athame put on a box at night is found lying next to the bed of the owner.

Athames used for pagan rituals for longer period is said to absorb energies and the power is retained in it. A new blade is regularly has to be given life through pagan rituals. The owner is at great risk if he or she misutilizes the authenticity of the blade. That means it absorbs the negative energy instead of the positive energy. Negative energy always provide bad effects on people. In fact it is not the knife which is bad but it is the user who has evil aim. Athame is a sacred knife and it should be respected and used in good purposes. It should be used like the other ritual tools.

The blade or athame is used in protection rituals. After reflection you should handle the athame and think that the protection power is being channeled to the blade through the hilt. The other is love ritual when you use athame. These rituals work and the blade becomes great through the energy you put in it. After the pagan rituals it is essential that you clean and purify the blade perfectly. Athame is considered to be a magical knife utilized in pagan rituals. Many people practicing this religion use athame and wand simultaneously as it is believed both represents different elements in the rituals.

The owner should be vigilant about giving the athames to other people because this magical knife is considered to be very sensitive. It is wise advice that the athames should not be given to any person who is not competent.
