Dog sitters are required by law to be licenced, especially if they are coming into your home to walk them. One option around this is almost a 'doggy day care' or group that allows you to drop off your dog and pick them up at the end of the day. These doggy day care units are becoming more common the country over, but what's the difference between them, and people picking up and walking your dog?

Dog walkers versus dog sitters

Dog walkers come to your home once or more times a day, and walk your dog. Their interaction with your pet is short, as it's only while they are being taken to the van, walked, and then returned that they have that all important human contact. In many cases, these groups have lots of dogs to walk, and walk them in sets of three to six. They can also offer one on one service, but these are more expensive. They need to have a set of keys, to collect your pet, which means there needs to be a level of trust amongst you and the group you're using.

Dog sitters on the other hand, take your dog in the morning, and you collect them at the end of your working day. They are constantly in the best place for them - with company and support throughout the day, plenty of walks and more. You drop your dog off at the place where they're cared for, and you don't need to give them a set of keys to collect or bring back your dog.
These 'day care' groups are also designed to care for many dogs at once, but it's important to remember that your dog has to get on with others to take advantage of this service - you can't send an antisocial dog to dog sitters, and should use an experienced dog walker instead.

If your dog needs to take regular meds, or is on a specific diet, you should make sure anyone caring for them knows this - it's important to be sure that you're comfortable leaving your pet in the hands of any carer, without needing to phone and check, but at the same time, you should trust these groups of people, it's always good to leave your pet in an environment that stimulates and keeps them safe while you're at work. It's best to start them in these services from puppy age, but if you can't, most dogs adapt rapidly.
