Pain in the lower jaw is usually due to temporomandibular joint or TMJ pain as it is called. These joints are located on both sides of the head just in front of your ears. There are other related problems in these areas but all fall under the category of TMJ disorders. Most TMJ problems happen due to physical stress or sometimes emotional stress on the structures that support the joints. It can be one-sided or the lower jaw pain can be felt on both sides, to varying degrees of pain.

Jaw pain sinus is often confused with normal dental pain though both of them are very different. Jaw pain sinus can occur only in the upper part of the jaws because only those are associated with the maxillary sinus cavity. Dental pain can occur in any part of the jaws. Jaw pain caused by sinus is very spontaneous unlike dental pain which is continuous. Swollen gums are also associated with jaw pain sinus disease

Temporomandibular Joint (also known as "TMJ") is the joint that connects the lower jaw bone and the skull. This joint is used very regularly, most often in eating and talking. People that are experiencing TMJ jaw pain may feel pain when this joint is moved, or they may have pain all the time regardless of the motion that is occurring in the jaw.

TMJ starts with lower jaw pain, and be caused by many different reasons. Some of these are trauma (car accident, a punch to the jaw, etc...) to the joint, extended amount of stress (stress causes us to clinch the jaw) or hereditary causes such as arthritis, etc... No matter what caused it for you, the pain is all the same.

Arthritis can affect any joint. You may need to go to a medical doctor to rule out arthritis of the jaw joint.Sleeping on your tummy pushes the head to one side and can cause tight muscles and pressure on the jaw.Sometimes the ball and socket keeping the joint in place may slip off from their normal positions causing the jaw to open and/or close imperfectly.

TMJ symptoms can be relieved relatively quickly, provided you practice good habits of self-care. If you are prone to TMJ pain, avoid chewing gum and break the habit of chewing on fingernails or pens. When symptoms flare, your goal should be to give your jaw a much-needed rest. This means switching to soft foods, supporting your jaw with the back of your hand when yawning and relieving pressure with a neck support pillow or a rolled up towel.

Many areas of the face and head can experience relief when these trigger points are released, such as the around the jaw, head, eyes, ear, and teeth. Patients receiving this type of treatment may also be advised to do things such as sleeping with a night guard for teeth, eating softer foods, avoiding rash jaw movements, and using relaxation techniques.

The headache occurs as a result of secondary symptom of the actual disorder of the jaw joint. Therefore, the sufferer may experience dizziness also. This has a simple explanation; since the TMJ connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone in the skull, any feeling in the joint can be easily transmitted to the head.
