Never assume that the medical equipment being used on you is acceptable and does not have any negative effect on you. Although by virtue of being a medical device it is foremost a medical technology that is available to determine what is wrong with us, especially those that are not seen with the naked eye. Most medical equipments are found only in the hospital but there are some that can be found at home for personal use. Those found at home are medical devices that can be used to help monitor the patient’s current medical situation. Take for example the sphygmomanometer which is used to measure blood pressure. It can either be manual or digital blood pressure monitor. Whether it is hospital medical equipment or one that is used at home, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to evaluate medical equipment and devices to make sure that they are safe for use and effective.

One of the most note-worthy achievements in the medical field is the X-ray which can show you what is inside the body without having to open up the body. X-ray is one of the most relevant medical equipments ever produced as it is not only used to identify injuries from accidents. What we may not realize is that X-rays can be used to screen for, diagnose, and treat various medical conditions. This medical equipment can be used on just about any part of the body, from the head down to the toes, to determine health problems including broken bone, pneumonia, intestinal blockages, heart disease, and kidney stones.

Despite its great medical value, the X-rays also have one medical drawback which is exposure to radiation and FDA is responsible for regulating radiation-emitting products including X-ray machines. Because it is effective in early detection and treatment of disease as well as their ready access, X-rays are most often used on more people today. Unfortunately, medical x-rays can cause a small increase in the chance of developing cancer later in life and developing cataracts and skin burns after an exposure to very high levels of radiation. Still, the benefits of this medical equipment far outweigh its negative effect or medical risks.

According to FDA, consumers play a critical role in reducing radiations risks while still getting the maximum benefits of X-ray exams. It is important for patients to find out if the X-ray is important and how it will help. If there are other good ways of assessing the medical situation without the risk of radiation then try it. But, never refuse an X-ray that your healthcare professional strongly advises. The risk of not having a needed X-ray may be far greater than the small risk from radiation. Let the X-ray technologist know if you are pregnant. Ask if a lead apron or a protective shield can be used. And most importantly, know your x-ray history. Make a list of your imaging records to avoid unnecessary duplication. It is also very important that one tries to find out the different medical equipments used on your medical tests and examinations, their benefits and risks, so that you know what questions to ask your doctor.

Author Resource:- Its been in the hospital laboratory for 2 years and gratefully taking care of medical equipments used to help monitor the patient's current medical situation.
