Dry mouth and throat, also know as xerostomia, is often is the most difficult oral condition to completely cure. Having a dry mouth and throat can cause an individual to be diagnosed with halitosis. This is why it is common for someone suffering from halitosis to also suffer from dry mouth and throat. It is possible for a dry mouth and throat condition to increase the growth of bacteria in your mouth therefore increasing your chances of getting gum disease, tooth decay, and a number of other oral health problems.

Xerostomia can cause a number of other problems as well. It is possible for dry mouth to affect the swallowing process and even digestion. It is possible for people suffering from xerostomia to find success with treatment. Treatment can help improve a patients dry mouth conditions or even help them return to a normal salivary flow. Unfortunately, some patients will not benefit from treatment. People who are suffering from dry mouth and throat conditions should begin by taking simple steps to correct their problems. It is extremely important to stay hydrated. It is recommended that people suffering from these conditions drink at least eight glasses of water each day.

There are number of other things an individual with dry mouth and throat conditions can do to help improve their situation. Chewing sugarless gum can also help increase your salivary flow while you are chewing. There are many things that have been known to cause halitosis. Post nasal drainage is also known to have a connection with causing halitosis or at least mild bad breath. People suffering post nasal drainage will notice that the mucous in their mouth beings transforming into a thicker substance. This can sometimes travel down the back of your neck.

Most of the post nasal drainage is swallowed but some of it will end up being left on the top of the tongue. This mucous will be more noticeable near the back of the tongue. Sometime post nasal drainage will become even more noticeable. There are situations in which it can cause an individual to clear their throat or swallow repeatedly. It is also possible for this drainage to cause a mild chronic cough because of the mucous sliding down the neck far enough to reach the larynx therefore setting off the cough reflex.
