The Caribbean island of Haiti is the perfect tourist destination if you are looking for warm climate and beautiful ocean vistas. Despite its beauty Haiti has had its own trials and tribulations as a country. It is ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world and the 2010 earthquake only worsened the situation. Though the people living on the island are very resilient they do require continued assistance and support from the rest of the world. Learning the Haitian language will really help someone who wants to reach out and help.

In order to learn Haitian Creole you need to understand what Haitian Creole is. Many people assume that Haitian Creole is a dialect of French but it’s not. You therefore don’t need the knowledge of French in order to learn Haitian Creole.

First and foremost you need to understand what the term ‘creole’ means. A combination of two or more languages is what is referred to as a Creole. The one used in Haiti was created in the 17th century to enable newly imported African slaves to communicate with their masters who only spoke in French. Over time the language developed a syntax and grammar of its own, evolving into a creole or hybrid neither European nor African. The connection between French and creole is very thin though.

The Haitian language is not difficult to learn as most people tend to think. You can attend Haitian Creole language school if you want to master the language fully. This will enable you to understand most of the radio and television programs which are produced in Creole. The Haitian Creole language school is highly recommended especially if you are going to work and live in the country for a couple of years or longer. The benefit of the lectures is that they will enable you to hear, understand and use the language as naturally possible.

In order to avoid learning the language from scratch, there are several Haitian Creole audio cassettes which can give you a head start in learning the language’ basics before moving to the country. The tapes are quite relevant especially when it comes to articulation and pronunciations.
