Roulette is a game named after a French word for little wheel. The origin of the game of roulette is lost in the dark recesses of history, where factual accounts are difficult to find. Many historians believe that roulette evolved from early games of chance that used a wheel to determine outcomes. The origin of roulette is not very clear. The first form of roulette was derived in 18th century France. In 17th century in his search for a perpetual motion machine which is a primitive form of roulette introduced by Blaise Pascal. The roulette wheel is believed to be a fusion of the English wheel games Roly – Poly, Ace of Hearts and E.O. The Italian Board games of Hoca and Biribi and Roullete.

The game described was first played at Bath, England in 1739. Who originated it is not known, but it undoubtedly developed from the game of Even or Odd.(E.O) where someone took a handful of buttons, beans, marbles or whatever was handy and the opponent tried to guess whether the total was even or odd. However, the modern version of the roulette wheel did not appear until 1842 when Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented the single “0” roulette game. The game was eventually brought to America in the early 1800's.

The history of roulette in America began, as did a majority of the other gambling games. With the arrival of the colonists in 1800's. Spreading rapidly across the country, the wheel was modified to include another zero. The single “0” modification was eventually rejected in America and the two zeros “00” where returned to the roulette wheel. The roulette wheel gained a great deal of popularity in America during the California Gold Rush. Although the odds for the casino increased it still turned into a huge hit. Soon enough the game became a staple in venues, often attracting high rollers and those in the higher upper class.

There are different types of roulette, the first one is the French – style roulette it was introduced in England on about 1820. The second is the American Roulette it is exactly the same game that was played in Europe over two hundred years ago. Today, roulette continues to be one of the most popular classic casino games, especially in Europe. This is due to the fact that European Roulette has only one zero and as result offers a more appealing house edge.
