After having children many women notice a marked alteration in breast appearance. The most common changes include: a loss of overall volume which occurs from atrophy, or shrinking of the fat cells caused by pressure as the breast size increases during lactation, an increase in the amount of the breast skin which also occurs during lactation and becomes apparent after breast feeding is completed and the milk glands return to normal, and a downward displacement of the entire breast as a result of the increase in skin and the effects of gravity. The consequence of these changes is most often an enlarged, widened but flattened and drooping breast. Traditionally operations were designed to deal with one of these conditions. A breast lift consisted of removing breast skin in a pattern to allow for the repositioning of the breast back to its original location. An enlarged breast would be treated by decreasing the size and removing skin and tissue (also called breast reduction), and a flat breast would be treated with a breast augmentation. However when all the conditions occur together, as happens after pregnancy, then a procedure combining all the different surgeries is the best treatment.

A breast lift combined with a breast augmentation allows for the optimal rejuvenation of breasts with the best possible results. The drooping of the breast is treated with a breast lift removing skin inferiorly and around the nipple area which also best hides the incision and moves the breast upward. The flattening of the breast from volume loss is best treated with a sub muscular (underneath the muscle) augmentation and a breast implant placed at the time of surgery or at a later stage if necessary.

Many surgical practices in United States (as I have observed for example in Newport Beach and throughout Orange County) offer breast augmentation or breast lifts. However there are very few who use this unique approach for treatment.
