The player who receives the highest number on the die is given the first turn. In instances of a tied number, the players roll again to determine who goes first.

There are rules before playing backgammon, to start the game, each player cast one die. A player who has a random points has completed a Prime. A single man on a point is called a blot. A player who has made all six points in his home board is said to have a closed board. If the opponent has any men on the bar, he will not be able to re-enter it since there is no vacant point in his adversary's home board.

A player is compelled to take his complete move if there is any way from him to do so. Another rule is once a player has brought all his men into his home board, he can commence bearing off.
