Using a spelling software and word games like scrabble or word search are just some of the ways beginners can be taught how to properly spell words. These take into account that all children learn to spell and read using the same processes. This is by decoding the sounds they hear when the word is said. Children then link the sounds to the alphabets and with this they are able to spell the word.
Keeping this process in mind which beginning readers go through is important to determine the suitable teaching methods to help improve their skills and hasten this improvement. If you are a teacher, you don't only want to give the lesson but you also want to see improvement in your student so ensuring the correct method is used is your responsibility.
What to teach
As mentioned above, children link the sounds of the words to their alphabet so the basics will still include lessons introducing the Alphabet, sounds and pronunciation of each letter and word-picture association. Supporting lessons can also include:
Long and short vowel sounds
Consonants: Beginning and final sounds
Word Patterns like and, hand, band, sand
Syllabication
Prefixes and Suffixes
How to teach
Children and other beginning learners in whatever subject need a lot of reinforcement so they get to practice. This practice is what will make them learn. The same goes for spelling words. The activities that should be used to teach spelling need should aim at practicing the students in spelling words. Here are some suggested activities:
Use a Word wall where children can write their words and ensure that they have the correct spelling on the wall
Require a class recitation where children need to say out loud the spelling of the word and tweak it a little by having a child use it in his own sentence
Read a Story and the complex or new words from the story will be spelled and used in a sentence using the events, places or characters in the story.
Conduct repetition writing, though this is similar to a punishment in the old classroom days, writing the word repeatedly on paper is a great way for the child to memorize the word. The fun is when the child is able to fill the paper.
Use a spelling software or online program, these are great for introducing students to online and interactive spelling activities which will boost their interest in learning English words.
Use spelling workbooks to emphasize the lessons more and the activities in the books will serve as the homework of the children
All these activities should be chosen carefully to ensure it fits the level of the student. Their ability to understand the words and relevance of knowing the spelling is to be considered too. So, spelling instruction and lessons should be kept in an interesting and entertaining level to keep the focus of the learners for faster advancement.
