Identity theft is now becoming one of the fastest proliferating crimes over the internet. But identity theft was once practiced in real situation than virtually for over a thousand years ago. History can prove that identity theft or fraud is something that is not too easy to detect in a short while. While authorities are building strategies and ways on how companies prevent themselves of being victimized by identity thieves or by fraudulent people, there are still techniques that can simply be used. Techniques such as using a particular uniform to pose as a policeman or a medical uniforms to act as a nurse is becoming one of the several ways to advance fraudulent acts.
In August, a report posted in a local newspaper about a poser that uses medical uniforms (a scrub in particular) and a wig who has allegedly broke-in in different nursing homes in Wisconsin. Michelle Lyn Horton, 44, of Brooklyn Center has been arrested after reports pointed her to be the culprit in a series of theft in the vicinity which includes equipment, personal belongings, and credit cards. In her series of operations, she was not easily detected because she wore medical uniforms similar to those uniforms of legitimate employees. In August 16, police received a call from an employee at Elim Nursing Home in Watertown and reported a stolen credit card. The caller reported that the thief wears nursing scrubs and dons a wig. Several hours later, the suspect has been spotted and located because she made a transaction at a local gas station using the stolen credit card. After police eventually secured a warrant of arrest, cases begin to uncover alleging Horton to be part of other crimes she did in other places. Several stolen belongings and purchased objects using stolen credit cards have been seized by police.
While Horton was at the nursing home, she visited several rooms without permission, twice being caught by residents who had not given her permission to enter their rooms. In one case, a resident heard a noise behind her and turned to see Horton standing in the room. Horton told the resident she was from the care center, said a report in waconiapatriot.com.
Such a story gives a rather negative effect to the professions of thousands of Americans that work in nursing homes. How this woman had done such act is incomprehensible especially that according to reports, Horton drives a VW Jetta and tried to buy a Xbox 360 game with the stolen credit card. This could mean that the suspect is living in a rather average status. But the most unacceptable act here is that, Horton robbed those elders who were living through their pensions already.
Well, medical uniforms now become an object of fraud with this story but this does not signify that all who wore similar uniforms are bad people. There are nurses that are far worth thanking for their countless heroic deeds saving not just those in the sick room but also the ageing. So no matter how bad the image this story portrays, it is still good to look at the bright side.
